Imagine a ball of chewing gum, spat out into a vast space of cosmic rays, asteroids and stars etc. The ball of chewing gum having bite marks, showing it being plastic, ductile. Currently covered to two thirds with spit, thanks to being uneven leaving some dry spots where non-aquatic life flourishes. Should the ball of gum smooth out to a perfect sphere, it would be completely covered in spit.
Furthermore, the ball of gum is attached by an invisible string to its nearest star, that string being known as gravity. The string is also elastic, so that the ball of gum does not travel in a centered circulation around the star. This feature on its own is creating variations in surface temperature on the ball. The ball has enough gravity of its own to hold gases around it. These gases are called atmosphere. This atmosphere is no less than absolutely vital in protecting life on the ball from most of the common dangers scattered around in space.
This particular star is the dynamic center of whole range of different balls of gum, generally called planets. They are aligned in two to three dimensions so that they do not collide. Some has an atmosphere, others don’t. The common denominator for those with an atmosphere is that their respective mean temperature is a result of the volume of gas and the planets gravity. In short, the temperature is a result of atmospheric pressure.
Our ball of gum, our planet, let’s call it Earth has been around for 4,5 billion years. During this time temperature has varied with at least ±10 °K around 288 °K. In colder times life was brutish and short, in warmer times life flourished and the last 5000 years even created civilizations.
Oddly enough some people on Earth fear that a small, almost infinitely small, addition of CO2, contributed by themselves, will make the temperature run amok with perhaps +2 °K, causing all sorts of devastation to the planet. But as we can see from historic proxy data Earth has been much warmer than that and managed just fine.
Proxy is of course the closest we can come to calculate a mean temperature, since we did not have instruments to measure temperature until about 200 years ago. In these 200 years we have bit by bit gotten more and better instruments to measure temperature. But this has not really made it easier to name a correct figure for Earths mean temperature.
One reason for this is that instruments to this day are not evenly distributed across the planet. The instruments are also placed on different levels above the sea and some even in poorly chosen locations to be a part of an effort to find a representative mean temperature.
Another reason is that the instruments we do have are not calibrated to the same degree of precision. Some scientists try to overcome that problem by adjusting recorded data. But there is no proven specified way how correct the data.
This becomes even worse when some of these scientists choose not to reveal their formula for adjusting and some even refusing to submit unadjusted data to be publicly scrutinized. This of course opens for more questions than it gives answers.
So why are a few determined scaremongers so successful in scooping up hordes of followers and believers in their preaching of an impending apocalypse if man does not repent and stop letting CO2 out all together?
Can it be that they cannot see that a little more atmosphere provides a little added protection from the cosmic dangers? Can it be that they do not see the vastly more serious threats that hurling around in space at a speed of 108.000 kilometers per hour presents to a ball of gum with some spit on it? Can it be that the majority of people will rather rely on authority than to think for themselves and seeking answers they deem right or at least probable by applying logic to proven facts? Can it be that the majority of people do not see the bigger picture, that the mean temperature of a planet is the direct result of its atmospheric pressure? That the natural result of Breathing (CO2) has no effect on temperature?
